More About Therapy

Why should you work with a Psychologist?

What is Working with a Psychologist Really Like?

If you have never worked with a psychologist before, it is completely normal to have questions about what it will be like! Read on for my views on therapy and see the article on the myths about working with a psychologist by Green Leaf Psychological.

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process in which an understanding and respectful relationship between you and your therapist is absolutely essential.

In therapy I take great effort to create a safe environment where you will feel comfortable exploring your situation, discussing your concerns, and working towards solutions to your problems. You should always feel accepted and never judged.

In the first session, I will start slowly by simply learning more about your concerns and other aspects of your life that may be important (for example, your work or education, family, relationships, etc.). When we both believe that we have a better understanding of the situation, we work together to set goals, determine changes you would like to make in your life, and create a plan as to how we will achieve them.

Therapy sessions are usually 50-60 minutes. Regularity is very important in therapy. It is like learning to drive a car. If we don’t practice regularly, it takes more time to feel comfortable with driving! Of course, how often we meet is completely up to you. Sessions every two weeks are most common, but depending on your situation you may wish to have weekly or monthly sessions - the choice is always yours.

The goal of therapy is not only to learn how to solve the problem(s) brought during the therapy, but also to develop new skills to solve any future challenges that can arise. Developing those new skills will help you to see the world with a different perspective, and therefore to feel more confident in your ability to navigate through the world - regardless of the challenges that life throws at you!
